Chicago has been global news for the last two days as a result of the delightful Polar Vortex. My outdoor thermometer recorded a low of -26 deg F. Yikes, that is a bit nippy!
But today it has warmed up a lot and when the temperature reached 8 deg F I bundled up, jumped in my car and drove to the shore of Lake Michigan to check out the ice. I was not disappointed.
It was like an alien landscape with mammoth chucks of ice and plants encased in icy tombs.

I even made a video, if you listen carefully you can hear the ice creaking and cracking (just wished I had held my phone the other way around!)
This is not the first time I have experienced the wrath of the Polar Vortex. We had another one in 2014, but it only got down to -19 deg F and only for a day not two. I photographed the ice then too – check out Polar Vortex 2014
Lets hope we can have a least a five year gap until the next one!
