Dear Chicago House,
We are opening your door today for a guest writer, Joanna from Design Shuffle. She is going to give us all some lovely ideas for lighting suitable for a modern dining room. Your dining room is well on the way to recovery after years of brown but it does still have the mother of all hideous light fixtures in there, so I am excited to see what Joanna has pulled together.

Hi, I’m Joanna, a writer for Design Shuffle. This terrific site offers interior designers a chance to show their work and design enthusiasts a chance to enjoy it. I love working for them, as I get to do what I love best—look at beautiful things all day long. I gather decorating ideas and images and bring them to share with blog readers on sites such as Creative in Chicago. Thanks to this lovely blog for letting me share today!
The Grand Dame of interior decorating, Dorothy Draper once said, “Even in a formal dining room you don’t want to be ponderous or gloomy. Eating is really an indoor sport. You play 3 times a day and it’s well worthwhile to make the game as pleasant as possible.” With that in mind, I bring you eight dining room lights to keep the gloom at bay.
A modern interior gets amped up with a gorgeous contemporary chandelier. This light fixture would be nice on a dimmer switch to control the mood.
This contemporary dining room enjoys the light from a fabulous drum shade light fixture. The light’s natural motif goes nicely with the spicy hues in the space.
Gorgeous! This unusual yet chic ceiling mounted fixture give this lovely dining room big personality. This space is full of remarkable dining room design
ideas!
I love this brilliant and wild fixture. It fits so nicely with the contemporary décor of the room. The light seems as if it is organic and alive.
The lantern glass pendant light in this modern space leans more to the traditional style, yet it works beautifully in this interior design. A lantern like this may even look lovely hanging in kitchen designs.
This drum pendant in weathered brass and white shade flows nicely with the classic lines of the dining room.
This light is all about black metal and crystals—it’s an unusual combination that works perfectly. Does it inspire any interior design ideas?
This orb chandelier gives a feeling of movement to the space. It coordinates prettily with the modern table and French dining chairs.

Joanna,
Very fun guest post.
I should pay more attention to lighting. I think of it as task rather than bringing the beauty. I guess my nature is function over form. (But, that's not too pretty, is it?)
Oh, my that black metal and crystal chandy reminds me of a huge ballroom I did a ballet performance in when I was about 5.
It was / is in Chicagoland, called The Martinique. Anyway, it had grandiose fixtures. I was amazed and overwhelmed. (And, then apparently I fell asleep right on the dinner table. Zonk!)
Holy Moly! I love all of these. From the super whimsical icicle looking one to the rustic straight line square…and then the sphere! So awesome!!
love the orb chandelier
The Black Metal and Crystals chandelier is perfection! Who is the manufacturer? I gotta have it!! Thanks!
